JYC Committees

Communications: This Club standing committee works to enhance the sharing of information among members.  It handles the online presence of the JYC through email, our interactive website, and social media.  Interested members may assist with marketing campaigns on social media, website design (do not need technical skills), and email campaigns. 

Education & Safety: The Education & Safety Committee Chairperson is responsible for the instruction, training, and education programs for the Club.  The committee is interested in hearing from all members on topics they would be interested in.  The committee is also interested in hearing from members who would be willing to teach a class.

Fools Rules: This committee works to conduct the annual Fools Rules Regatta which support local Jamestown charities with its income. Interested members may help with set up/clean up, parking, registration, regatta product sales, regatta awards voting, or on the water safety.

House:This Club standing committee works to ensure that Club property serves the Members.  Interested members may work on Club moorings by staying up to date with harbor policies and procedures for Block Island and Dutch Harbor; research and recommend potential mooring sites; maintain a detailed list of all Club property; gather information on potential property acquisitions; and/or interface with Harbormasters, mooring services, and others associated with Club property.

Junior Scholarship Committee:  Joshua”s Memorial  Sailing Scholarship Committee job reach out to the surrounding communities and Jr. Sailing Programs to inform them of the availability of the scholarship for children between the ages of 8 and 16 years of age who wish experience the sport of sailing. 

Membership: This Club standing committee welcomes new members, answers questions from families interested in joining, issues and monitors annual membership renewals and JYC membership cards, and maintains the membership records for Club use. The committee welcomes volunteers to assist with a range of activities and tasks, depending on their interests.  This could include friendly outreach to potential members as well as members who have recently joined the club; helping to update the member database; updating and mailing JYC membership cards; and compiling new member packets.  Any help is very welcome.

Cruising: Volunteers to the Cruising Committee will work to enhance the JYC cruising experience through assisting with planning and executing the annual cruise, assisting the cruising chairperson while on the annual cruise to enhance the group experience by organizing and leading group activities.   There is opportunities to plan and possilby lead the “pop-up” cruises throughout the seasong, and help promote group cruising with JYC.

Racing: This Club standing committee works to conduct the Club’s annual racing series and associated racing social events. It handles both on and off the water efforts to support the race conduct.   Experience is not necessary and interested members for this committee may perform administrative or on the water tasks.

Social: This Club standing committee is responsible for the social calendar of events for our members.  The Committee manages the planning for events, as well as implementing the plans regarding event location, food/beverage, equipment, set-up/clean-up, and volunteers necessary for hosting the event.  This also includes purchasing and safe management of food/beverages.  We work closely with event location personnel in planning events.  Communication with members about events is necessary and requires coordination with the webmaster.  At all events, the Social Committee members serve as welcoming hosts, encouraging member engagement.

Board Member at Large: The Members at Large are voting members of the Board of Directors of the Club. They may serve on committees as well as on the Board. One Member at Large is elected and serves as an officer. Other Members at Large may be appointed and serve as regular members of the Board. The Board generally meets once a month.

By-Laws: This Club committee is responsible for 1) periodically evaluating the current By-Laws and recommending changes, as appropriate, to the Board; 2) evaluating and determining impact of suggested modifications to the By-Laws by members of the Club; 3) supporting the Board in interpreting the current By-Laws; and 4) advising the Board in responding to questions from Club members regarding the By-Laws.  Interested members will work with like minded members on these stated responsibilities.

Nominating: This Club committee will focus on openings in the Club’s Board and evaluate members with the skills and characteristics required of Board candidates to prepare a slate to present to the Club Secretary per the By-Laws. Interested members will support generation of the annual slate of officers by conducting interviews for Board candidates and working with other nominating committee members to evaluate those candidates.
