Cheryl letter one may 2025

As we prep for the 2025 Sailing Season, I’m reflecting on topics which may impact our Club, including the Rhode Island Boat Tax legislation, H6256. While our recreational boating community around the Bay has been meeting to address declining numbers of sailors in our sport due to in part the expense, our legislators are looking to further tax that community. This legislation will impact not only our local boaters but RI’s tourism as well, since our 400 miles of coastline provide amazing opportunities for vacationers to enjoy our waters.  As I’m writing this, the vote is later today, so am not sure how it will pay out, but hopefully, many of you reached out to respond on this one before the Tuesday vote. The Club did send our protest.

Additionally, the Coast Guard is looking to reduce costs by removing navigational buoys. There’s still time to respond to this one as you’ve seen in our previous eBlasts.  While there is GPS available now, not everyone in our local Bay waterway, may be utilizing it or understand the importance of the channel buoys in navigating around our narrow channels with the commercial traffic we have as well.  Feel free to reach out to me at commodore@jyc.org or to Gary Engelson at racedeputy@jyc.org with inputs as we craft our JYC response on this one. Individual responses are also welcome.

With much happening to change/impact our time on the water, what is still the same for JYC is why Jack and I joined JYC back in 1987. We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Commissioning & Sock Burning event coming May 18th to continue that camaraderie.  Please feel free to bring any friends who may be interested in joining JYC.

Fall Race #2

After no wind, then fluky wind, caused a postponement of Race #2, the wind piped up stronger than predicted.
We sent the fleet off on a course to avoid the S Class regatta and the 2 cruise ships in Newport harbor entrance.
Many thanks to Vento Solare and crew for moving the pin end for us when the big shift occurred.

Hopefully, everyone enjoyed the beautiful day on the water!  See you all next week.

Post Summer Race #10

To our Summer Series Racers,
Results of Races 8 and 10 have been updated as well as the Season Summary to address scoring changes due to protests.
This finalizes our Summer Series.

See you on the water for the Fall Series!
