JYC racers,
I have finalized RC’s investigation into the tug/barge incident with the fleet on 7/28/2026 Summer Race #6. Attached please see our resulting findings and lessons learned.
Any additional information folks may have to share is welcome; email to fleetcaptain@jyc.org or contact me at 401.782.7271.
Due to this incident, you may expect some changes in the SIs regarding the safety regulations.
Until those are finalized, please designate someone on your boat to pay attention outside of your boat during racing. Ensure your radio is on and you are heeding RC’s calls regarding commercial traffic. These vessels are typically running at speed in order to maintain steerage and their work schedules. They come up quicker than you may think and their viewing angle is much like our blind spots on the highway. Refer to the safety presentation included in the Skippers Meeting presentation as a refresher.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. It would be a shame for the USCG to shut our racing down due to another incident like this summer’s.
